SECURING YOUR CAREER PATH
MEMORABLE SOCIALS
A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

President's Address
Jessica Ma
President, 2021/22
Welcome to the LSESU Law Society! My name is Jess, and I’m so happy to be your President for 2021/22. We are one of LSE’s biggest societies with over 550 members (and over 850 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic!), offering a number of social, career, and pro-bono opportunities.
The Society offers an incredibly diverse range of activities and opportunities for all our members. Our sub-divisions include: the Bar & Chambers, the LSE Law Review, Pro Bono, and Lawyers Without Borders. Whether you’re interested in mooting, taking part in social justice initiatives, or looking to secure a career with the biggest law firms and barristers’ chambers, we have lots to offer!
We host a great number of careers events each year, with over 25 City law firms sponsoring us. Our flagships this year will include our annual ‘Know the City’ Legal Forum, ‘Meet the Vac Schemers’, and ‘Diversity and Inclusion in Commercial Law’. These, as well as a whole host of events run by our sponsors and Careers Officer, will put you in the best position possible to secure the career in law that you’re looking for.
Our socials are renowned on campus for being some of the best across LSE. Prior to the pandemic, students attended each of our sold-out events: October Welcome Drinks at Old Bengal Bar, Christmas Drinks at Dirty Martini, and our annual Law Ball, held in 2019 at One Whitehall Place. During the pandemic, we hosted a massive gift giveaway and multiple virtual socials throughout the year, with events such as pub quizzes and virtual escape rooms. This year, we’re going to be bringing back our famous in-person socials alongside our virtual ones; if you’re interested in meeting new, like-minded people at university, the Law Society is the place to be!
The work of our members and the sense of community we create continues to be recognised year upon year – we have been awarded a Gold Star for four consecutive years at the LSESU awards, and won ‘Best Society of the Year’ in 2018. In 2020/21, we were nominated for the ‘Best Student Engagement Award’ by LawCareers.Net, and have also been nominated for ‘Best Careers Event’ and ‘Best Society Overall’ in previous years. On top of that, we won ‘Best Law Society President’ in 2019/20 and ‘Best Mooting Activities’ in 2018/19.
Studying at university presents many new challenges, but also exciting opportunities. We provide a strong support network for law and non-law students alike – non-law students made up 40% of our Society’s membership in 2020/21! The whole of the LSE Law Society committee, our SSLC representatives, and our Wellbeing Officer are there to help whenever you need it.
We have worked hard to bring you quality events despite the impact of COVID-19. We are very excited for you to join us this year and show you what we have planned, both virtual and in-person! Hoping to see you at an event soon – and please do say hi if you see me on campus!
