Access to legal knowledge does not just mean people obtaining legal representation. In order for people to understand their rights and responsibilities, they must first be ‘legally literate’. It is therefore important that legal literacy begins from a young age, so individuals are able to apply their legal understanding to everyday life.

 

Our Street Law programme was set up by the LSESU Law Society’s Pro Bono Division in 2020, to help students in London become legally literate, as they learn to identify legal concerns and learn about the law in context. This programme is designed for students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13, though certain curriculum content will be recommended for older students. 

 

Under this scheme, our law students work with schools and community groups to increase access to legal knowledge where it may be limited, teaching non lawyers about law, the legal system and the fundamental principles of democracy.
